How can I delete duplicate product vendors?

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner encountered duplicate vendor entries (e.g., “Canton Cattle Co.” vs. “canton cattle co”) created by different team members and seeks a way to merge or delete them to maintain clean records.

Current Limitations:

  • Shopify lacks native functionality to edit or delete vendor names directly
  • The system doesn’t accommodate human error or provide easy correction methods
  • Multiple users expressed frustration with the absence of official solutions

Workaround Discovered:
One user shared a method involving creating a fake purchase order to access vendor editing options, though this applies to suppliers rather than vendors and doesn’t work for users relying on Stocky for purchase orders.

Potential Solution in Development:
A developer proposed creating an app that would:

  • Display all vendors in one centralized view
  • Identify and merge duplicate/similar vendor names
  • Auto-suggest corrections for misspellings
  • Update all associated products to use the corrected vendor name

Important Caveat:
While the proposed app would clean up vendors in Shopify, Stocky doesn’t automatically remove unused vendor entries, potentially creating new duplicates. The developer is investigating whether this can be automated.

The discussion remains open as the developer collects feedback through a survey to guide app development.

Hello,

Is there a way to delete product vendors? For example I have another person helping me upload products, and while the vendor is set up as “Canton Cattle Co.” she entered it as “canton cattle co” so this makes it as two vendors, but it’s the same vendor. I’d like to keep things tidy if possible. Thank you

Still no way to edit vendors. No way to edit or delete vendors or suppliers in Stocky either. This system doesn’t allow for human error or tracking of changes. Permissions are like the wild west for staff. We need to be able to make corrections when there are errors! We need to be able to make custom refunds on the POS. There are a thousands things this system can’t do that are basic functions still.

There’s actually a way. Here are the steps (I’ve got shopify in Italian so the labels may differ a little bit, but you’ll find them)

Step 1: create a fake purchase order and select the vendor you want to edit
Step 2: once selected, under the vendor’s name you will see a link ‘Show vendor’
Step 3: click on the link and it will appear a small pop up at the bottom of which there’s another link ‘edit vendor’
Step 4: there you may edt the vendor’s info or delete the vendor

Hope that helps,
Bruno

I was excited to read this, however, it didn’t work for us. We don’t have vendors as an options in the Shopify purchase orders, only suppliers. We use Stocky for our purchase orders. I sincerely hope I’m missing something and we can find a work around.

You are right! I had in mind suppliers when I replied to this post.

Hello everyone,

I’m thinking about developing an app that will merge duplicates and clean up vendor names with ease.

Here’s a quick overview of what the app could do:

  • View all vendors in one place
  • Search and filter to identify duplicate or similar vendor names
  • Merge duplicates with a few clicks
  • Automatically suggest corrections for misspelled names

Before proceeding with development, I’d love to get your feedback. If you’d like to help shape this app, please fill out the brief form below.

Your responses will guide us in creating a tool that meets your needs.

I’ll review the feedback and decide on the next steps in the next few days.

If you’re interested in testing the app, you’ll have a chance to get early access

Thank you for your time and support.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Do you mean within Shopify or within Stocky, or both? If it doesn’t translate into Stocky, your merged one will create yet another one for us to navigate, so this is an important piece of info.

The app could merge vendors like “nike”, “NikE”, and “Nike” into one clean vendor (e.g., “Nike”). All associated products are updated to use the correct vendor.

In Shopify, the cleanup is complete and the old vendor names are no longer linked to any products.

However, Stocky does not automatically remove unused vendors. It will sync new vendors from Shopify and link them correctly to products but it doesn’t delete the old vendor entries, even when they’re no longer in use.

I’m looking into whether that part can also be automated or improved.
