shopify generates a part number for each item in the store. The part number is #0001 etc. It would be nice if this part number was displayed (on or off) on the item for sale and on the address label when printed out so I could know which item to include in the package being sent out.

I think your pertaining to the order number. This only shows if the customer order. If you need like a product number. You can use the SKU and assign a unique number for each product.
