Goal: In the Sense theme, show only the images for the selected color variant (e.g., selecting Black displays only the Black image set), with multiple images per variant.
What’s been tried: Assigning images to variants in Shopify admin changes the main image on selection but doesn’t hide other thumbnails. A blog method using alt text to group images by variant was attempted but didn’t work as expected.
Suggested approaches:
Built-in setup: Assign images to each variant in Products > Variants (affects main image only).
Apps to control image sets per variant: GLO Color Swatch, Swatch King, Bold Product Options. Another recommendation is Rubik Variant Images (Sense-compatible) to attach multiple images to variants and show only relevant images. Demo and free trial provided.
Theme customization: A YouTube tutorial specific to the Sense theme was shared to display selected color images; videos are central to implementation details.
Status: No confirmed native solution that hides non-selected images; consensus leans toward an app or custom theme code. Issue remains open pending implementation/confirmation.

=> Under Variants, I’ve added the four unique colors.
At the moment, when I upload the images under Media, every single image appears on site when the user is on the product page. When the user selects a different color, only the thumbnail I’ve selected appears as the main image, but the rest of the images stay in the same order underneath.
Is it possible to set up the images to only display when the user has selected that color?
Example: User selects Black, only the Black images appear. When they select Cognac, only Cognac images appear.
I’m using the Sense theme. Open to suggestions. Thank you!
Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I’d be happy to provide some assistance with product variants, to ensure this gets resolved. To confirm I’m fully understanding, are you looking for the product image to change when switching between variants?
If so, we have a great Adding Images To Product Variants document that touches on how you can complete this. It will provide customers with the ability to see what each variant of a product looks like, making the shopping experience as simple as possible.
To achieve this, you can:
Head to Products, from the Shopify admin.
Click the name of the product that you want to edit.
In the Variants section, click the image icon to assign an image to that variant.
Select a product image or click Add image to upload a new image.
Click Save.
It’s important to note however, that the other variants will remain available for customers to select from. If you’d like to customize this, I recommend checking out the Shopify App Store. We have various apps available that may allow you to successfully achieve this. For ease, I’ve gone ahead and made a few suggestions listed below that you can look into:
Unfortunately, it isn’t working as expected when I add the alt text.
When the user selects Black, I want ONLY the five of the Black Images to appear. If the user clicks Cognac, I want ONLY the give Cognac images to appear.
Hi, If you’d like to display only the relevant images for each variant on the product page, you might want to check out the Rubik Variant Images app. This app lets you add multiple images to each variant, showing only the images for the selected option. It’s fully compatible with the Sense theme.
