How can I edit text in a checkout image?

Topic summary

  • Goal: Change checkout checkout text “Pay with Local & Alternative Payments” to “Apple & Google pay.”
  • Initial guidance: Use Shopify’s Language Editor (Online Store > Themes > … > Edit default theme content > Checkout & System; search for “Pay With”). Note the text is dynamic and may require trial and error; screenshots were provided to guide the steps.
  • Result: The user could not find or change the specific line via the Language Editor.
  • Clarification requested: Support asked which words to change, whether Shopify Payments is used, and if Express Checkout buttons (e.g., Google Pay) appear; they also requested the store URL.
  • User details: Confirmed using a third‑party payment provider; the phrase isn’t present in the Language Editor and shared the store link.
  • Final update: Shopify confirmed third‑party payment gateway titles in checkout can’t be edited in Shopify; they’re controlled by the payment provider. Support added this thread as feature feedback for potential future updates.
  • Outcome: No current Shopify-side method to change that label. Discussion concluded with thanks. Images were central to illustrating the Language Editor steps.

I wonder how it is possible do edit this text in the picture.

Hi there, @Sam8715 . Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Community today. My name is Imogen. It’s good to meet you!

Often times, customizations to the checkout pages are not possible. However, for text changes like these, you can actually customize them by making use of something called the 'Language Editor’. This tool allows you to customize and alter the default wording and language of the theme you’re using, giving you greater control over the information shared with your customers!

I have some steps that you can use here below to change the wording for that specific spot. Note: This spot has dynamic text that already changes based on your payment gateway set up, so it may take some trial and error to get the text working how you want. I recommend copy/pasting the text that appears in the section by default somewhere so you can restore it if needed.

1.) First, login to your Shopify Admin

2.) Then, go to ‘Online Store’ > ‘Themes’ and hit the ‘…’ button next to the ‘Customize’ button for your theme.

3.) From that menu, select the ‘edit default theme content’ option

4.) This will load the Language Editor. From there, select the ‘Checkout and System’ option

5.) Once done, you will have filtered the content down to just information appearing in the Checkout. Type ‘Pay With’ into the search bar, and then edit the text shown in the highlighted box

6.) Remember to save your changes!

Once you’ve made these changes, navigate to your checkout to see how the language is reflected! Continue to tweak it until you have the text appearing as desired!

Thank you for your reply,

And thank you for a very detailed and clear information steps.

I did try this solution, sadly it did not work

I hope you have another method.

Hey again, @Sam8715 ! Thanks for following up with me so quickly!

Are you able to tell which words specifically you’re looking to edit in the line of text that you would like to alter? If you can tell which specific words from the line of text, I can dig in more deeply into how to change them, if it’s possible!

Hello
Thanks for your reply
I want to Change the following:
Pay with Local & Alternative Payments

To

Apple & Google pay.

Hi again, @Sam8715 ! Thanks for specifying the specific wording!

I’m pretty confident that changing the text in the steps I suggested should do the trick for you, though the Language Editor can be finicky and it can be difficult to find the exact line of text you want to change to have the desired wording showing, so I could be off here! Can you let me know what changed when you did adjust the wording for that line?

Additionally, are you using Shopify Payments in your store, or are you using a different payment gateway processor? Does your checkout feature ‘Express Checkout’ buttons at the top of the checkout page, that include options like Google Pay?

I’d love it if you could follow up with answers to those questions! The reason why I ask is because, when I try to make this change myself in my test store, I don’t have the same payment option as you do - suggesting that you may not be using Shopify Payments to process Google Pay/Apple Pay payments, and you’re instead using a third party gateway to facilitate those options.

Also, if you could pass along your store URL, so I can see your checkout myself to see this wording, and the options within the menu, I would greatly appreciate that!

Hello :slightly_smiling_face:
The words I am looking for are unavailable in the language editor.
Yes it’s true I have a third party payment provider.

I would highly appreciate if you can check it :folded_hands:

Best regards

Hey again, @Sam8715 ! I appreciate your patience here while I’ve been taking some time to look into this.

I took some time to reach out to some resources internally to see if I could find some information around why these changes in the language editor weren’t working as expected. It turns out that third party payment gateway titles in checkout can’t be changed, and are set by the payment provider.

It turns out that some folks have been asking for the ability to change the title of this method to something different. I’m happy to go ahead and add this thread to the collection of feedback for this feature - that way our developers can see it, and know that it would be valuable to you.

I was hoping that we’d be able to figure it out, but it looks like it’s not possible to do at this time. Hopefully our develops see the value in such a feature, and decide to add it in a future update.

Thanks alot for your time and help.
