How can I edit the 'inventory issues' pop-up text at checkout?

Topic summary

Main issue: Editing the Shopify “Inventory issues” pop-up text that appears when a customer requests a quantity higher than available stock.

Context and approaches:

  • One suggestion was to avoid the message by syncing actual inventory to Shopify in near real time to reduce out‑of‑stock friction and potential lost sales.
  • The store opted not to connect directly to their inventory system, using a weekly spreadsheet with a percentage of stock to preserve supply for core customers.

Resolution (text edit):

  • The pop-up text can be modified via theme content:
    • Online Store → Edit default theme content
    • Use the search to find the “inventory issues” string and edit it.
  • Screenshots provided show the location within the theme content editor.

Open question (unresolved):

  • A later participant asks how to trigger the same “Inventory Issues” pop-up when clicking Add to cart, not just Buy it now (dynamic checkout). Currently it shows only on Buy it now. No solution or code guidance was provided in the thread.

Status: Original request resolved; follow-up request remains open.

We have set a certain amount of stock to be available for Shopify only but this does not mean we don’t have additional stock which hasn’t been allocated.

When a customer adds an item and the qty required is not available a pop up shows “inventory issues”.

I want to be able to edit this text.

But how?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Little bit of a different approach to solving this, but what if instead you had a way to automatically sync your actual inventory levels to shopify so that the inventory level in shopify was accurate at any time?

Thanks for the suggestion, but we are providing a percentage of the stocks availability which is only updated on a weekly basis. This is so that we can still serve our core customers, we haven’t sold online for over 10 years (via our own shop) and only launch this shop this year.

Ah I see. I’m not sure where / what format you’re pulling the inventory from on a weekly basis, but one solution there would be to automate the inventory updates so they happen roughly in real time.

Even if you do modify that message, you’re likely losing sales because if a customer sees a message that something is out of stock, they are likely going to leave even if the message is tweaked.

That said, I’m guessing there is probably a way to tweak that message in the theme settings. Don’t know exactly where that would be off hand though.

Thanks for your help, at this moment this is how our MD would like the stock to run and doesn’t want to connect directly to our Inventory System so I’m stuck with my weekly spreadsheet upload. I appreciate what you’re saying about losing sales but hopefully if someone can tell me how to tweak the message it will keep some sales live. Thanks again for your response.
