We’ve been using Shopify POS for about two months. I can’t believe the difficulty in getting help for any kind of issues. I’m spending way way too much time entering and receiving items then printing labels each day. I just came to this forum thinking I must be doing something incorrectly that it’s so time consuming. Apparently, we’re all feeling this.
Topic summary
Retailers migrating from QuickBooks/Intuit POS to Shopify POS face a critical workflow issue: the inability to efficiently print barcode labels directly from received purchase orders (POs).
Core Problem:
- In QuickBooks POS, users could receive a PO and immediately generate labels for all items with correct quantities in one step
- Shopify POS requires manually searching for each item individually, adjusting quantities, and printing labels one-by-one
- For POs containing hundreds of items, this transforms a minutes-long task into hours of work
Impact on Users:
- One user reports spending 15+ additional hours weekly on this task alone
- Multiple retailers describe this as a potential “deal breaker” that may force them to abandon Shopify POS
- Particularly problematic for stores using Avery label sheets (30 labels per 8.5x11 sheet) rather than Dymo single-label printers
- Label template alignment issues compound the frustration
Attempted Workarounds:
- Third-party app “Multi-Label Barcodes” ($10/month) - criticized as inadequate for serious retailers
- Manual Excel/Word mail merge process using Stocky CSV exports
- Sorting products by “Newest & Updated First” to batch-select recently received items
- None considered satisfactory replacements for integrated PO label printing
Shopify Response:
Community manager Shay acknowledges feedback is being shared with developers but provides no timeline or commitment for implementation. Multiple users report the QuickBooks Migration team has logged requests since June with no progress.
Current Status:
Several retailers have already abandoned or are reconsidering Shopify POS due to this missing functionality, which they consider basic POS 101 for brick-and-mortar operations. The October 2024 QuickBooks POS sunset deadline adds urgency for migrating retailers.
