How can I efficiently upload and set up multiple items for my printed product business?

Topic summary

A store owner needs a faster way to set up 500 pattern/image options across 8 materials for a printed product and asks if templates or photo matching can automate the process.

Recommended approach:

  • Use Shopify’s CSV import to bulk create/update products. Export an existing product first to see the required column format, then duplicate rows and edit as needed.
  • Ensure each new product has a unique handle so existing products aren’t overwritten. (Handle = the product’s unique identifier used in URLs; CSV = a spreadsheet format for bulk data.)

Action items:

  • Export a sample product from Shopify.
  • Build a CSV with all patterns/images and material variants.
  • Assign unique handles to each new product.

Notes/limitations:

  • No specific method for a “template” or automatic photo matching was provided in the reply.
  • The guidance focuses on bulk import mechanics; image/template automation remains an open question.

Status: Partially addressed with CSV import advice; discussion appears open for further tips on templating or image automation.

I sell a printed product so I have 500 patterns/images that you can choose from and 8 different materials you can have it printed on. What is the best way to set these up/upload so I am not doing to same exact thing for all 500 items? Can you set up a template and then match photos or anything to it? Thanks - I’m going crazy doing them one at a time

Hi

You are best to import them using a csv file: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/import-export/import-products

If you have already set some up do an export of them so you can see the format required and then most likely you can duplicate the rows and modify what you need. Be sure to create a new handle for new products and not reuse handles as they will get overwritten if already exist.
