I am new to Shopify and I am trying to setup a new store for a Scout Troop. From what I can tell there is no way to put a comment box on the checkout page, only the Cart page. However, I need to make sure Scouts get credit for their sales and I need some way to have customers tell us who they want that credit to go to. What I was thinking is forcing one to go to the “view cart” page not jump directly to the “checkout”. page. Is there anyway to so this??

If you are using default “DAWN” theme, you can choose “Page” as “Cart Type”. This will redirect user to the cart page everytime they add something to the cart.

“Attribution” is the key word, generally though this is solved by apps or services for affiliate links and tracking.
Keep in mind forcing a display is not the same as making an input required which would prevent checkout unless the specifically enter some info. If the names, or for privacy callsigns or codenames , are pre-known and public use a dropdown or image buttons of the scouts(remembering privacy).
For vintage themes use cart attributes (“attributes” as a general term not about the concept of attribution), OS2.0 themes like dawn may need knowedgable adjustments
Additionally make sure to setup a shopify-flow workflow to tag any orders missing
