How can I get a refund for an accidental domain purchase?

Topic summary

Accidental domain purchases on Shopify are not refundable. Domains are treated as non-tangible, irrevocable digital goods and, once bought, are owned for one year per the Domain Registration Agreement.

Options offered:

  • Transfer the domain to another provider (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap).
  • List and sell the domain via a marketplace (e.g., Sedo, GoDaddy).
  • Turn off domain auto-renewal to avoid future charges.

A separate case about a ~$400 charge was clarified as likely a Shopify subscription fee, not a domain. Subscription billing is automated monthly or annually; to prevent future charges, cancel before the next billing date.

Potential relief: While domain fees can’t be refunded, subscription charges may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Affected users should contact Shopify’s live support via the Help Center, proceed through the chat, and select “I still need help” to reach a Support Advisor.

Status: No refunds were issued in-thread. Domain refunds are not available; subscription refunds may be possible after support review.

Hi , I accidentally purchase a domain name what do I do to get my money back?

Hi @voguette

Ted here from Shopify, thanks for posting your query!

I’m sorry to say but we can not issue a refund after a domain is purchased as mentioned here. Once purchased, you will own this domain for 1 year. You can absolutely transfer the domain to another provider such as GoDaddy or Namecheap if you would like or you could sell your domain by using a domain marketplace company like Sedo or Godaddy.

Do you still have a store with Shopify or are you hoping to close the account along with the domain? If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know, I’m happy to help!

Many thanks,

How do I get a refund if my site with Shopify was unfinished and wasn’t visited since last year? I was charged today and deactivated my account. Please help. The automated help doesn’t take you to an email or phone number.

Hi, @AliceNBoots !

Thanks for reaching out, I’m helping Ted out with some responses today.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide refunds on domains. Domains are considered non-tangible, irrevocable digital goods which are not exchangeable or transferrable. Once a domain is purchased, it belongs to the buyer for the year ahead and cannot be refunded. This is outlined in the ‘Domain Registration Agreement’, which is presented at the time of domain purchase.

If you have any questions about this or your account, I recommend contacting our live support team through the Help Center. We can help you ensure you’ve turned off auto-renewal for your domain to avoid future charges. To get in touch, head over to the Help Center, enter the details of your question into the chat assistant, and then click I still need help to be connected with a Support Advisor.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

I don’t have a store at all. I bought it and didn’t follow through, so there’s not a thing there. Disappointing to spend almost $400 for NOTHING.

Hi, @AliceNBoots

It sounds like you’re referring to a Shopify Subscription, as domains aren’t generally $400. Please note, our billing system is automated on a 30 day, or annual period. In order to prevent the recurring billing you would need to cancel the account before the next billing date.

That being said, we do take situations into consideration. As such, please follow the advice of Greta and get in touch with our team via the Help Center and they can review any potential refund.
