Every single day for the last 3 months my store has been receiving 3-6 visits from the same littly not-very-populated town somewhere in Iowa. I am not sure if this is competition looking at my site or someone intentionally driving down my conversion rate and skewing my analytics. Council Bluffs, Iowa is too small a city for there to be consistent traffic and I know someone is spying. Should I find their IP? How do I do that? Should I ban the IP of the entire city? Please help!!
Hey, @Miamimink .
This is Elias from Shopify Support. I’d be happy to help with some suggestions!
You can ban certain customers from checking out on your store using our free app, Fraud Filter. While this app can block IP addresses, cities, states, countries, and regions, this doesn’t prevent the banned customers from visiting your shop. Though I’m not sure how you can find the customer’s IP, as the IP is only available when an order is processed or when an attempted payment was made on an abandoned cart. However, you can block a small city from checking out with Fraud Filter. If you’re interested in setting up Fraud Filter, we’ve also got a guide to help you with that - Set up Fraud Filter rules.
Alternatively, you can consider using a third-party security app that can completely block customers from visiting your shop using the same parameters as Fraud Filter. This way, you don’t need to worry about the analytics and conversion rates getting skewed. You’ll also be able to block a city from visiting your shop. That being said, I’ve handpicked a few of these apps that can help you achieve this:
If you need help with a third-party app, the app developers are also available to help. You can reach out directly to the developers through the contact information found in the Support section of their app’s page.
