How can I identify removed items in an exported order CSV file?

Topic summary

Core Issue:
When orders are edited in Shopify and items are removed, the exported CSV file still displays those removed items with no way to distinguish them from active items. This creates significant problems for reporting, accounting, and inventory management.

Impact on Users:

  • Revenue and COGS are overstated in financial reports
  • Fulfillment reports become inaccurate
  • Removed items are incorrectly sent to third-party systems like ShipStation
  • Users must manually review and adjust exports, which is time-consuming and error-prone
  • The issue affects both order exports and return reports

Timeline & Status:

  • Problem has persisted for 3+ years (thread started ~2021, still unresolved as of late 2024)
  • Shopify staff acknowledged the issue and stated developers are aware, but no fix has been implemented
  • No official timeline or commitment for resolution provided

Workarounds Mentioned:

  • Manual review and adjustment of CSV files (not scalable)
  • Third-party tool “Report Toaster” (paid solution)
  • One user analyzes the returns export CSV alongside order exports in custom code

Current Status: Unresolved, with growing frustration from merchants who rely on accurate export data for accounting and operations.

16/08/2024 The issue is still same. I have been working manually. This is simple thing but shopify cannot resolve. Don’t know what is stopping them to update this. I have been using shopify from last 3 months, before we were using wordpress woocommerce. There were issues technical part so we switched to shopify and now I found so many small things shopify cannot fix, especially with respect to removed items and adjusting sales of current month when we update in last month orders. Monthly subscription fees and transactions fees are deducted without any issue but they cannot fix their problems since so many years (atleast more than 2years since this thread started)

Common guys do something, you cannot take a whole decade to do this, otherwise display disclaimers when people are buying shopify that you have these issues. Sorry for this but I am accountant and I have to waste weeks of time fixing reports
