How can I identify removed items in an exported order CSV file?

Topic summary

Core Issue:
When orders are edited in Shopify and items are removed, the exported CSV file still displays those removed items with no way to distinguish them from active items. This creates significant problems for reporting, accounting, and inventory management.

Impact on Users:

  • Revenue and COGS are overstated in financial reports
  • Fulfillment reports become inaccurate
  • Removed items are incorrectly sent to third-party systems like ShipStation
  • Users must manually review and adjust exports, which is time-consuming and error-prone
  • The issue affects both order exports and return reports

Timeline & Status:

  • Problem has persisted for 3+ years (thread started ~2021, still unresolved as of late 2024)
  • Shopify staff acknowledged the issue and stated developers are aware, but no fix has been implemented
  • No official timeline or commitment for resolution provided

Workarounds Mentioned:

  • Manual review and adjustment of CSV files (not scalable)
  • Third-party tool “Report Toaster” (paid solution)
  • One user analyzes the returns export CSV alongside order exports in custom code

Current Status: Unresolved, with growing frustration from merchants who rely on accurate export data for accounting and operations.

Same issue here. A costumer orders 10 blue bags for €100. After the order, I remove two blue bags and add two red bags. Exactly the same price. The order amount stys the same, €100.

Now the nonsense: the orders export csv shows €120 for this order. There is no way to see the removed items. But why are the added items there then? In my returns report, the two blue bags I removed are also not there. Sorry but this doesn’t make any sense. Please shopify, fix this! Just don’t list the removed items in the orders export csv!!!
