How can I make categories vertical in the Brooklyn theme?

Hello, I am building a website on shopify and I am using the brooklyn theme. I am trying to get my categories to be vertical like the tutorial below and not horizontal. I was reading thru the help forum and it said it might be something with the brooklyn theme? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to have these lineup as vertical. Really appreciate it.
