We have the same issue. I can’t believe that Shopify does not have a good solution to this. I am currently trying to find a 3p app that will help. No luck so far ![]()
Topic summary
Merchants using Shopify’s multicurrency feature face confusion when selling gift cards across different markets. The core issue: gift cards are only issued in the store’s base currency, but customers purchasing from other regions see confusing converted values in confirmation emails.
Example scenario:
- A £150 UK gift card purchased in the EU costs €160.65 (after 10% price reduction + conversion)
- Confirmation email shows £140.77, creating customer confusion
Current status:
- Multiple merchants confirm experiencing this same problem
- No native Shopify solution exists for true multi-currency gift cards
- The issue becomes more pressing during high-volume periods like Christmas
Proposed solution:
- A third-party app called “Givy” claims to solve this by:
- Displaying denominations in customer’s selected currency (£100, $100, €100)
- Processing payments in that currency
- Sending notifications in the selected currency
- Updating balances hourly based on exchange rates
- Allowing redemption in the original purchase currency
The discussion remains open regarding whether this or other solutions effectively address the limitation.
