Normally shopify manages the item stock, per item>variant1>variant2… etc.
But my business is about customizable items. What I need to track is how many items of the same color/size I have left, but in common for all items.
Is this possible? How can it be done? Thanks.
If I get what you mean, these products are like bundles, right?
In that case, perhaps the logical way is to check the availability of the products you are combining in this custom bundle and use the one that has less stock among those to calculate how many are left / available for that combination.
Example, a custom product is made by product A, Product B and Product C, they have respectively 10, 14, and 8 stock left, so the amount of stock left for the combination will be 8 as it’s the maximum you can sell all the three together.

This is a common issue for our users where they have a master stock product which is then linked to multiple other products as they use that master stock for say printing on. The way to manage inventory is to bundle each product or variation that uses the master SKU. There are 3 points to consider:
1. Inventory Management
Our bundle app lets you connect up all your products to correct SKUs and we then update their inventory based on the component stock level. So in your example if you have 10 variations that use the stock of a master SKU they will all update based on that master stock level.
2. Order Fulfilment
When you sell one of the variations the master stock level won’t reduce automatically. What Bundleup does is update the order post purchase by replacing the order line with the master SKU as order line which then reduces that stock. This then feeds into point 1 above where it updates all linked products.
3. Bulk Set Up
If you are dealing with variations there are a lot to go through and set up so rather than doing them one by one we offer a bulk CSV file upload solution to automate the process and reduce the time it takes to set up. This also lets you update bundles easier if you ever need to change them.

You will also need to ensure that the same SKU is not used on multiple products but rather all should be unique. The bundle app will hold the correct SKU.

In case you haven’t found a solution yet, and you are looking to bundle your items, our app is able to meet your needs as it is primarily a bundle inventory management system so it will also be able to track the SKUs for variants of each product.
Proper quantity will also be taken out of the inventory of each bundle that is being purchased.
