How can I merge multiple customer accounts?

Topic summary

Merging multiple customer accounts in Shopify. Initial responses confirmed this was a limitation, with feedback forwarded to developers. Community members expressed frustration and referenced an earlier workaround thread.

Latest update: Shopify has launched a “Merge customer profiles” feature in Admin (some users see it labeled “new”). You can identify duplicates by matching name, phone, email, or other overlapping attributes.

How it works:

  • Go to the Customers page in Shopify Admin and find a duplicate.
  • Open one customer profile, review data.
  • In the Customer Data section (bottom right), click “Merge customer.”
  • Search for the other profile and complete the merge.

Limitations: Not every profile can be merged; constraints are documented in the Shopify Help Center (link provided in the thread). One user noted the help article link didn’t open from their Admin.

Outcome: Feature is now available; the thread was locked and redirected to a consolidated feedback topic (“Merge Customers - Feedback And Questions”). The discussion moved from feature request and complaints to announcement and guidance, with ongoing feedback encouraged.

Good afternoon,

I know this question has already been asked in a previous post, but the Shopify Staff Member has since retired it seems…

Our business is just wondering if there is or working on a way to merge customers? It seems a few of our customers have created multiple accounts when purchasing online.

Thanks, Krista

Hi @kristasands ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I’m happy to share some insight with customer accounts, to get this resolved.

As you mentioned, customers can sometimes create multiple accounts when purchasing online and can completely understand the importance of merging those accounts. This however, would be considered a limitation of customer accounts.

As I can understand the impact of this, I’m more than happy to share these notes with our Developers. We are always working to improve the platform and appreciate this feedback. While we cannot guarantee this feature will become available, the more requests we receive will lead to its likelihood for change within the future.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns.

Hi @kristasands ,

This question has been asked for so many years and the official shopify response to you is AMAZINGLY the same as it was then. Thankfully, @calebstephen posted a solution earlier this month that actually works:

https://community.shopify.com/c/shopify-discussions/merging-customer-accounts/m-p/1647233/highlight/true#M302330

For whatever reason, Shopify isn’t publicizing this but thankfully, accounts can finally be merged through the process in the linked threat above.

Too bad we need to jump through hoops like that for something this important. And yes, I agree, and would add that Shopify hasn’t AMAZINGLY added this important feature; having known about it for years now. Square has long-owned the crown of the most unresponsive product support, but Shopify seems to be gaining ground. I hope they drop out of the race.

We’ve been asking for SOOOOOO long and Shopify doesn’t care. People keep asking and bumping those questions but still nothing!

Hi Blair,

In my backend the function to merge clients has just appeared (with the typical label that says “new”)… it’s great news, but I can’t quite understand how it works and when I click on the link that is supposed to take me to the article that does not happen, can you explain a little more what happens with this functionality?.. I imagine that it may be too new and that not everyone can see it, I am very interested in trying it, can you help me?

Thank you

You can now merge customer profiles. Thanks to your advocacy and feedback - you can merge customer profiles to ensure you have the most accurate view of your customers.

Identify duplicated customer profiles with the same name, phone number, email address, or another overlapping attribute then merge customers to make sure you maintain quality customer data.

To merge customer profiles:

  1. Search for a duplicate customer in the Customers page of your Shopify admin
  2. Click on the customer’s name and review their customer profile data to identify what data needs to be kept or removed.
  3. Click into one of the duplicate profiles
  4. On the bottom right of the profile you will see a heading called, Customer Data
  5. Click the button in that section that says Merge customer
  6. Search for the customer profile you intend to merge.
  7. Complete the merge steps.

Keep in mind, not every customer profile can be merged. There are some limitations for merging profiles that you can review in the Shopify Help Center.

We know this has taken time, and we appreciate your patience. We are excited to be launching this improvement for you today and look forward to hearing your feedback so we can keep improving your experience maintaining customer data in Shopify.

To help ensure feedback on the new Merge customers feature isn’t missed we’ve created a single feedback topic, and locked this particular topic.

If you have any feedback to share please post a detailed message in this topic: Merge Customers - Feedback And Questions
