How can I notify customers to use only Roman letters for shipping addresses?

Is there a way to add in a note during the checkout phase under shipping address to notify customers that we only accept shipping addresses written in roman letters so that there will be no characters (Kanji, chinese, korean etc characters) When the shipment is processed, our shipping courier, USPS does not allow for shipping address to be in listed in foreign language characters/letters. These packages with non-roman letters get returned back to us, the senders.

Please help me solve this issue, any advice will be appreciated. Mahalo!

Hey, @AvantiHawaii ! Welcome to Shopify Community!

While we are unable to edit the checkout and add elements to it as a way to keep it secure, there’s a workaround you can do to add the text or the notice about the customer shipping address. You can utilize the text that is already there and edit it to reflect the message you want to convey to your customers. In this case, you can edit the text Address and you can do so by following the steps below.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.

  2. Click Actions > Edit languages beside your current or live theme.

  3. In the filter text box, type Address.

  4. Scroll down until you find Address1 label under the Checkout contact section.

  5. Type in the word Address then your message. For example:

  6. Click Save.

This is how it will look like at the checkout:

Are you shipping internationally? International customers may be discouraged from placing an order if their address cannot be supported in your store. If you have a growing number of orders that need to be shipped outside of your home country, it may pay to look into using an alternative courier for international orders. We have a list of couriers that ship internationally on this blog post and a link to each of their shipping calculators. Feel free to check it out and see if your store can use a different courier to accommodate all international orders so you don’t miss out on any sales!

Thank you very much, Summer! That solution works for us.

Yes, we offer international shipping. It just has to be Romanized, so for example, ā€˜Tokyo’ is acceptable, but ę±äŗ¬éƒ½ (Kanji for Tokyo) is not acceptable for USPS processing.

My pleasure, @AvantiHawaii ! Thanks for the update. I’m glad to know it works!

Ah, I see what you mean. In addition to adding the note to your checkout, feel free to add it to your shipping policy too, if you haven’t yet, so customers are aware of the expectations when placing an order.

Hi,

Could you please add ā€œContact form noticeā€ field on checkout. There is ā€œShipping method noticeā€ in Edit default theme content but not a similar field on Contact form -page. This issue could be easily and beautifully done by being able to add a sentence of text under Contact form header. If we add the ā€œuse roman lettersā€ notification in other fields it either shows up too late (solution when using address field) or it shows up too big (when using contact form header field) Also, our checkout is in Japanese which means long sentences are cut off sometimes in the middle of the word. This happens in mobile when we add notification using header field.

If there just was a contact form notification field it solved all of this… Or maybe it is somewhere and I haven’t found it yet ?
