How can I optimize a slideshow for both desktop and mobile displays?

I want to add a slideshow at the top of my home page in place of a single image. It seems that the image is cropped pretty drastically and in very different ways for desktop and mobile displays. Does anyone have any advice on how to work around this issue and create an acceptable slideshow for both types of display.
