I would like to know the best way to try and get abandoned carts back to buy?
Topic summary
A user seeks strategies to recover abandoned shopping carts and convert them into completed purchases.
Key recommendations provided:
-
Automated drip campaigns: Set up triggered emails that send automatically when customers abandon carts, with timing suggestions of 15-30 minutes for the first reminder
-
Email sequence strategy: Send an initial reminder without discounts, then follow up with incentives (small discount or free shipping) only if customers don’t return—avoiding training shoppers to wait for coupons
-
Effective messaging: Use clear subject lines like “Still thinking it over?” and include direct cart recovery buttons to minimize friction
Challenges identified:
- The original poster already offers a 15% popup discount for first orders, creating potential conflict with abandoned cart incentives
- Suspected abandonment causes include customers expecting discounts on already-reduced items and high shipping costs for international (USA) customers
Tool mentioned: Retentionly app offers abandoned cart automation with pricing starting at $9/month for 5,000 emails (500 free trial emails), charging per email sent rather than subscriber count.
The discussion remains open as the user plans to adjust their automation timing and reconsider their discount strategy.
Every brand will have a different style and tone to their abandoned cart emails. They all, though, focus on the same goal: persuading your audience to return to your site and complete their purchase.
Setting up and automated drip campaign is important. Once a shopper abandons their cart, they will get an automated email. All you have to do is create the email and set up the sending mechanisms. Here are some helpful examples that you can use as inspiration for your own abandoned cart emails: https://www.shopify.com/blog/abandoned-cart-emails.
Thankyou got the automations set up will look at the example thanks
Hey @Lou1970 ,
Great question. Recovering abandoned carts is one of the easiest ways to boost revenue without spending more on ads, and the right approach can really make a difference.
Here’s what works well:
- Send a timely reminder
Set up an abandoned cart email to go out within 15-30 minutes after someone leaves your site. That’s when interest is still high and they’re more likely to come back. - Use a clear message and strong subject line
Keep the email simple. Remind them what they left behind, and use a subject like “Still thinking it over?” or “Your cart is about to expire.” - Add an incentive (but not always)
Try sending the first reminder without a discount. If they don’t return, follow up with a second email offering a small discount or free shipping. This way, you’re not training everyone to wait for a coupon. - Create a seamless return path
Include a direct button that brings them right back to their cart. The fewer clicks, the better.
Retentionly – AI Email Marketing make this super easy. You can launch abandoned cart flows in minutes, personalize them with product images, and even add Shopify discount codes directly into your emails. No tech skills are needed, and you only pay for emails sent, so it scales with your store.

Thankyou I have the abandon cart in place not sure on the timing will check
that great idea to add an incentive as the next step but already have 15%
pop up off of first order!
I think I need to change the pop to something else and do the email sign up
with money off but then of course there is no incentive to come back.
A reminder for the incentive is great though and your other suggestions.
I suspect that some of my abandoned carts are because customers are not
only expecting 15% off but also 15% off already reduced items. Some are usa
probably dont like the postage costs!
Thankyou will look at changing my automations
Hi
Can you just clarify, do I pay extra for each email sent with this app?
Hi @Lou1970 ,
Yes, all our plans include a set number of emails. If you ever need more in a given month, you can easily add additional email volume to your plan. No need to worry about subscriber count.
Plans start at $9 per month and include 5,000 emails. You can also try the app for free with your first 500 emails.
Best regards,
Retentionly Team
