Topic summary
Core Issue:
Shopify users cannot permanently delete customer tags from their stores. Even after removing tags from all customers, they persist in the “available tags” list when managing customer profiles.
Impact & Use Cases:
- Case sensitivity problems: Apps relying on exact tag capitalization malfunction when duplicate tags with different casing cannot be removed
- POS confusion: Staff repeatedly select incorrect/misspelled tags because outdated options remain visible
- Integration failures: One user reports their MailChimp integration broke due to exceeding a 5,000 tag limit, with deleted tags still counting against this threshold
- Migration issues: Stores transitioning to Shopify or testing features accumulate permanent “junk” tags
Shopify’s Position:
Support confirmed this is intentional behavior “to avoid race conditions from the taggings table.” Tags are retained for historical data integrity and segmentation purposes. No user-facing deletion method exists.
Attempted Workarounds (All Failed):
- Removing tags from all customers
- Clearing browser cache
- Exporting/deleting/reimporting customer data
- Requesting database updates from Shopify Plus support
Current Status (May 2025):
After nearly 3 years and 11,000+ thread views, no fix has been implemented. Users report frustration with lack of progress, with some considering platform migration. Shopify staff last engaged substantively in 2022, directing users to submit individual support tickets.
