Over a year later and I’m still laughing at the fact that this is still an issue but they continue to push updates that no one wants and break things that work.
Same issue here, since a year or so looking for any kind of solution. And Shopify still doesn’t allow to delete customer tags.
Hello @Olivia_2 ,
It seems that no one from Shopify has looked at this for over a year and you were the last one to reply. Are there any updates or hopes for this to get fixed? I’m even just trying to change a customer tag from “workroom” to Workroom" due to app and code incompatibilities, and it doesn’t allow me to even make the first letter uppercase. Please pass this along to developers. This is a huge issue for many people. Thanks!
Hi I have not heard anything further. From what has been posted I believe it could be a large job for Shopify due to some principle issues in tags. Tumbleweed!
It seems that the developers push out code for new features, then create bugs, then fix the bugs, and they realize that their code is faulty but they can’t fix it because it would break other things so they don’t fix issues that have existed for years. Instead of creating code to clear out their search function and updating its corresponding “taggings table” so the “race conditions” wouldn’t occur they have decided that would be too much work and so are ignoring this.
Please fix this issue - adding my vote to the long chain asking for the same fix here
Still nothing, after almost 2 years, that’s ridiculous.
I’m of course having the same issue. Come on Shopify, do something.
Yes! This! What she said!
At least give us a way to hide the unwanted tags.
Having the same problem and reporting this also almost 2 years ago. The thread ended april 2023 with the following:
“I’ve passed along feedback here internally on your behalf that you are still seeing this issue so we have this noted along with the original ticket here - appreciate your patience on this! I can definitely appreciate that having old tags clutter your Admin isn’t great for customer management, we’re working on this here.”
Having been asked by my client if any solution has come up yet, I checked with Shopify Support yesterday, and this is the answer they came up:

thank you for reaching out in relation to customer tags, having explored on your previous tickets at present this has not adjusted. If I can share a little detail on tags and why this is the case that they are not deleted.
In Shopify, customer tags are used to categorize and manage customers effectively. However, when you delete or remove a tag from a customer, the tag itself does not disappear from the system entirely; it simply gets removed from that specific customer profile. Here are some key points regarding customer tags in Shopify:
-
Tags Are Not Deleted Globally: When you remove a tag from a customer, it does not delete the tag from the overall system. The tag will still exist and can be applied to other customers.
-
Visibility: If a tag is removed from all customers, it will still be listed in the tags section of your Shopify admin, but it will not be associated with any customers.
-
Managing Tags: If you want to completely remove a tag from your store, you would need to ensure that it is removed from every customer profile it is associated with. Once it is removed from all customers, it will still show up in the tag list but will not be actively used.
-
Bulk Actions: You can use bulk actions to remove tags from multiple customers at once, which can help streamline the process if you have many customers to update.
-
Apps and Custom Solutions: If you require more advanced tag management features, such as automatically deleting tags that are no longer in use, you might need to explore third-party apps available in the Shopify App Store or consider custom development solutions.
Customer tags in Shopify are designed to help merchants organize and manage their customer data effectively. Here are a few reasons why tags are not automatically deleted from the system when they are removed from all customers:
-
Data Integrity: Keeping tags in the system, even if they are not currently assigned to any customers, helps maintain the integrity of historical data. This can be useful for reporting, analytics, and understanding past customer interactions.
-
Reusability: Tags are meant to be reusable. If a tag is removed from all customers but is still available in the system, it can be easily reassigned to new customers or used again in the future without needing to recreate it.
-
Consistency: Automatically deleting tags could lead to inconsistencies in how customer data is managed. For example, if a tag was used for a specific marketing campaign or customer segment, removing it entirely could disrupt reporting or segmentation efforts.
-
User Control: By allowing tags to persist in the system, Shopify gives merchants more control over their tagging system. Merchants can choose to keep tags for future use or delete them manually when they are certain they are no longer needed.
-
Performance Considerations: Automatically deleting tags could add complexity to the system and potentially impact performance. Keeping tags in the system simplifies the management of customer data.
If this adjusts into the future, the Shopify Changelog is the best place to see all out latest updates on the platform. This can be access from two main areas, the Shopify Changelog page here or from your admin, by clicking to your name in the top right corner, and this will link you to the Changelog.

I am not convinced and I think Shopify should do better.

Karin
Thank you for sharing this. I don’t think any of us needed an explanation on this matter from the shopify team, we need a solution. We can decide whether old tags are needed or we just want to delete them.
As for me, I have decided to stop using tags, and now I use custom metafields instead, I use make.com (similar to Zappier) to automate updating these custom metafields together with shopify API. That’s the best solution I could come up with. And it’s working perfectly.
"Customer tags in Shopify are designed to help merchants organize and manage their customer data effectively. Here are a few reasons why tags are not automatically deleted from the system when they are removed from all customers:"
No one asked for tags to be automatically deleted. We should, however, be able to make the conscious decision to delete them and accept all reporting losses associated with deleting them, though. This is such a corporate non-answer.
"Shopify gives merchants more control over their tagging system" : If this was true then this thread would not exist.
Im going to keep this short and sweet in hopes shopify sees.
Weve been following this thread for years, as deleting or archiving customer tags is our biggest feature request.
Shopify - We literally do not even use customer tags due to there are so many old/outdated/close match tags in our list, it takes forever to find the one we want, let alone if its the correct tag as there are several similar phrasing tags.
This feature is of upmost importance and should be reviewed with someones live store to see a real scenario. Us for example have like 100 customer tags and have no clue what they mean.
Im also dumbfounded that this simple matter hasnt been fixed in 2 years! So many good things about Shopify, so many things that are mind numbing. Shopify/Flow and Email all seem to be the obvious choice with marketing because the products are part of the entire intergration. The tools that Mailchimp have for many things to do with customer lists are simply “as they should be in order to run an efficent ship”…but the product intergration for simple prodcut emails is bad and time consuming using Mailchimp as a 3rd party. Tools dont need to be complicated, just “complete” in functionality… and not being able to delete a tag!
Its frustrating, and frankly just not good enough.
Hi Oliva ,
It is now nearly two years since this issue was brought up - is the Shopify tech team anywhere near finding a resolution to a problem that is an issue for all Shopify stores? We have three stores with the exact same issue with unused customer tags appearing.
Same issue - need a fix!
Olivia:
This is incorrect. Tags that are not appended to any customers still show up in the list of available tags.
Welcome to Shopify! You’ll find many such limitations and oversights.
Same problem here. This need to be solved!
Hey Shopify team - I’m another customer in need of this. Can you please provide an update on when this will be possible?
We use Mailchimp for emails, and they have a 5,000 tag sync limit in their system. In the past thousands of tags were generated that are no longer needed, so we deleted the tags, but they still show up. It’s preventing us from continued email marketing campaigns for new customers.
