Not sure if in the right section; apologies if it’s not.
We have a ‘customer’ that is basically using our online shop to test to see if the stolen credit card numbers they’re using are viable. We’ve had 24 orders in a 3 day period all from the same account.
Some things to note;
They’re using a VPN because the IP address is always changing
We do have CAPTCHA enabled for online orders
We’re at a loss as to how to stop this aside from cancelling the fraudulent orders as they come in, and alerting Mastercard to the card theft.
Thank you for reaching out and bringing this to our attention!
I understand that you have a customer using and testing stolen credit cards on your shop. Since you’ve mentioned that the customer is using the same account, then you can consider using something like Fraud Filter to automatically block them from processing orders on your store - we’ve got a guide to help you with setting up Fraud Filter rules as well.
That being said, if you’d like to consider something with even more protection against fraudulent orders, then I’d recommend taking a look at Signifyd. Signifyd offers complete protection, such as insurance with 48 hour reimbursements. If you need any assistance with this app, then the app developer is always available to assist you - you can use their dedicated agent console or reach out directly to the developer through the contact information in the Support section of their app’s page.
I’m aware that the customer is using VPN and you have a CAPTCHA on your store. However, in order to help you determine whether the Fraud Filter rules is suitable for this task, can you share more details on which factors helped you identify this customer and the fraudulent orders?
We have recently implemented Fraud filter, and we notice after a few tries that particular account will stop making orders. In the last 2 months we’ve had 3 other accounts pop up and do this, the latest starting this past weekend.
Some reasons that we believe it’s fraud, outside of Shopify’s Fraud Analysis. The accounts always buy 1 of the cheapest item in our store (and it’s always the same item no matter what account they use), and they always choose in-store pick-up as the option for delivery even when the address is not even in the same country. Most telling of course is that there are usually multiple orders in a row all using different credit cards, sometimes multiple cards on one transaction.
We’ll definitely take a look at Signifyd and see what it has to offer.
