How can I protect my ecommerce images from being copied?

In the process of setting up a new ecommerce shop and I have a question around image rights protection.

I’ve created a number of ‘benefits’ images in Canva (example below) which I’m planning on inserting in the main description section to add a little colour and imagery to the text. My question is: Is there any way to protect these images from ‘save as’ within the main description field as they have taken an age to create and I’d like to protect them from people copying my designs and using as their own.

Thanks in advance…

Hi @SnootLoot ,

I totally understand your desire to protect your images. Shopify is very aware of the need for copyright and has some solid policies in place that allow you to report suspected copyright infringement.

That said if you wanted to take more prohibitive steps to protect your work, you could use a third-party app like Cozy AntiTheft which disables the right-click option. I also found a list of content-protector apps that may prove useful, although this blog is written by a third party so I cannot vouch for all the apps on there.

I like your thinking about wanting to add color and style to your product descriptions - what is it that you’re selling? And what stage are you at in your store development?

Hi Andrew,

Thanks very much for the recommendation for Cozy Anti Theft, I installed the app and now my images and text are right click protected - very happy!

I’m in the early stages of trialling the ecommerce solution from Shopify and am loading my catalogue of products. I promote natural dog food and care products, currently using a freebie ecommerce solution from SumUp but it’s very basic and doesn’t support the customisation I want to implement over the coming months.

So far, very pleased with Shopify and looking forward to getting to grips with social media integration and analytics which I hope will give me real insight into customer visiting habits and how well various pages perform.

Thanks again for your help,

Chris

I’m glad to hear that the app was a solution for you! I also passed your feedback on to our developers in the hope that it may one day become a native feature, but there are no guarantees on that.

It’s great that you’re promoting natural dog food and products - there’s too much synthetic rubbish on the market!

We’ve actually got a blog post on building a Pet Business that you may take inspiration from too. Open Farm is mentioned in that blog post, and they have 65K followers on Facebook, 91.1K on Instagram, but only 974 on Twitter.

So this might give you an idea of which social media channels to leverage (Selling on Facebook and Instagram may work better), but you could also utilize newer channels like Selling on TikTok! I’d recommend sticking to just one and strategizing cleverly around that first, rather than spreading yourself too thin at the start.

In terms of data, we have a great introduction to Shopify Analytics. Really your focus as a new store is simply attracting people to your site, so Acquisition reports are likely most important for you at this stage.

I hope this all helps!

Hi guys

Very helpful subject just on time with my stage of development.

Just was wandering what about watermarks on the images, in your experience is it something can be helpful? Does Shopify has service like that? And also is there any specific restrictions can be added to the file specs? sometimes I found the files in my folders mentioning that i don’t have rights to use it, how it happens?

Hi @DonielY ,

Glad you’ve found this thread helpful so far!

When it comes to watermarks on images, many people have certainly found that helpful. There are a few apps out there to facilitate this, here are a couple that I found when I went digging:

In relation to the files in your folders and the rights to use them, it’s possible that you have been trying to upload the wrong file format to your store. All accepted media types are included in our guide on Product media types.

What kind of store are you building? Is the imagery you’re using your own? I’d love to hear more!

I am building a store for custom made shelving solutions. Customer will
insert the measurements of the cavity he wants shelfs to be installed and
the filtering algorithm will show only those templates that can match the
space… So I have all rendered imagery made and want to copyright them.

That sounds brilliant! Yes, if you add watermarks to your images you could then import them all in one go using a CSV file. Although if you’re using an app you may not even need to do this step, you’ll learn more about that when you’re using the app itself.

Maybe eventually, down the line, you might even be interested in using media like video, 3D models, and augmented reality on your product page to increase a customer’s confidence in your products!

Have you made a start on your shipping strategy yet? If so, how will you be shipping your custom products?

I’d love to have a look at your store to see if there are any other suggestions or help I can offer!

Hi Andrew, thank you for your support, the only matter currently i am worried about is the order management. Since I have never seen how the process of the order approval is made in Shopify I would be happy to see all possible options exist in the system. May be this is matter for a different topic, however if we already talking about it I would like to get your advise.

My original plan was as follows.

  1. When the order is paid, the customer will be asked to book a check measure date and time allocated to that job.

  2. At the check measures I would like to have an option to modify and order , upsell, or down sell if needed.

  3. After the check measures confirmation and a final payment acceptance the order need to be processed.

  4. In regards to order processing… I want to have a set of hidden forms attached to the model shown to customers as a product. After final payment confirmation I want to send the hidden forms which are - Purchase Order and Job Ticket to product supplier from a list of service providers in the area (need to be preset in the system).

That’s the flow, I believe each stage has its own setups and I don’t have a clue what APP or Shopify feature can be used to implement all those steps in a flow.

Hope you have some idea for me..
