How can I remove the company name prefix from my Google homepage title?

Topic summary

Main issue: Google search is showing the homepage title with a company name prefix (“ecoepc: …”) even though the site’s meta title does not include it. The listing also shows “6 days ago,” and the poster asks if this is good or how to remove it.

Context/technical notes:

  • Google may rewrite page titles in SERPs (search engine results pages) using on‑page text, anchors, or other sources to better match user queries. Title tags are static, but Google tailors titles dynamically. Indexing delays can also mean updated meta titles take time to appear.
  • “Indexing” means Google has to re-crawl and process the page before showing changes.

Recent updates:

  • The prefix still appears after some time. The site is not using an SEO app; the poster asks if they should.

Attachments: Two screenshots are central (Google search result and the site’s meta title settings) to illustrate the mismatch.

Actions/suggestions:

  • Wait for reindexing and review Google’s title creation guidelines; audit on-page text/anchors that might cause the prefix.
  • Provide theme/SEO app details if pursuing further troubleshooting.

Status: Unresolved. The “6 days ago” display question remains unanswered.

My store has started to show in google now, but I have noticed my homepage title says the company name before the title like ‘companyname: Home page’

I have attached a screenshot which hopefully helps. You can see it says ‘ecoepc: EPC survey residential…’ but in my homepage title there is no ‘ecoepc:’

Does anyone know how to get rid of this?

Also you can see on the google listing it says ‘6 days ago-’ is this a good thing to display? or is there a way to not show this?

Hi @ecoepc , It’s good to hear that your website has started showing up on google page search results. Google takes some time to update meta titles because your website needs to be indexed again to show the latest meta title and meta description.

Please answer to these questions:

Are you using any SEO App? what’s the name of the theme you are currently using for your website.

Hello @ecoepc
I would like to give you the recommendation to support you.

Since a couple of years Google changes titles when it is better for user (according to AI).

If Google (GG) have detected that a particular result has one of the above issues with its title, GG may try to generate an improved title from anchors, on-page text, or other sources. However, sometimes even pages with well-formulated, concise, descriptive titles will end up with different titles in GG’s search results to better indicate their relevance to the query. There’s a simple reason for this: the title tag as specified by a website owner is limited to being static, fixed regardless of the query.

When GG know the user’s query, GG can often find alternative text from a page that better explains why that result is relevant. Using this alternative text as a title helps the user, and it also can help your site. Users are scanning for their query terms or other signs of relevance in the results, and a title that is tailored for the query can increase the chances that they will click through.

If you’re seeing your pages appear in the search results with modified titles, check whether your titles have one of the problems described above. If not, consider whether the alternate title is a better fit for the query.

Please check Google Help to understand better the way how Google creates titles in SERPs.

I hope the above is useful to you.

Hi

Apologies for the delay, the site is still showing as ‘Ecoepc: then my homepage title’. I don’t use any SEO app, should I be?
