I would like to have images under the main image bigger and if possible laced on the left side vertical, so the main image could be a bit bigger

Could you let us know which theme you are using and share your online store URL? As this context will allow us to assist you better in this situation.
If you are unsure about which theme is live on your store, you can navigate to the Theme Editor and select the three dots that are located in the top left of the page. I took a screenshot from my test store to show you the section I am referring to:
