How can I seamlessly transition my custom store to 2.0 without affecting live theme?

Topic summary

Main goal: Migrate a heavily customized Online Store 1.0 theme to Online Store 2.0 (Shopify’s newer theme architecture) without impacting the live site.

Context: Current store uses tag-based filters and tag-driven icons; these are now natively supported in 2.0. Wants to keep products, brands, URL structure, collections, apps, and product feeds intact, avoiding rework on tags and setups.

Attempts:

  • Building 2.0 within the current store causes interference with the live theme.
  • Creating a development store (staging environment) and importing the existing store’s data fails; the import times out and transfers nothing.

Desired outcome: Safely build a 2.0 version, then seamlessly replace the current theme without changes to URLs, product data, or integrations.

Status: No solution identified yet. Key blockers are a safe staging workflow that doesn’t touch the live theme and a reliable method to import/clone data into a development store.

Ok so I am trying to get my store switched over to 2.0… But I basically had a complete custom store on 1.0 with all the features I added tagging filter based, tags that put icons in places I wanted stuff like that all things we can now do native on 2.0. So, when I try and start building 2.0 out my current store it interferes with my live theme.

So now I have tried to make a developmental store, but when I do it, I click create store and import my old store with products files etc… But then it does not work it does not transfer says timed out or something and does not transfer anything.

I am not wanting to create an entire new store i just want to use the developmental store to get my same store set up properly under 2.0 and then transfer it into my old store.

any help or ideas would be appreciated

like products brands url structure I Still want all the same I just want to build out a 2.0 store then replace my current one with it seamlessly I do not want to have all knew product page tags and have to redo all my product feeds and apps and collections etc…
