How can I select specific collections instead of default collection - Pipeline theme

Topic summary

Main issue: Editing a rich text block on a collection page updated all collections because they all used the same collection template.

Key explanation: In Shopify, a template controls the layout/content shared by all pages assigned to it. If multiple collections use one template (e.g., “default collection”), changes appear everywhere.

Recommended fix: Create separate collection templates and assign them per collection.

  • In Theme Editor, open a collection page and use the top template selector (showing “default collection”) to create a new template based on the default.
  • Customize the new template.
  • Assign it via Products > Collections > select collection > Theme template setting.

Outcome: Original poster confirmed the solution worked.

New development: Another user reports the “hover over Default collection” UI does not reveal options in Dawn and Publisher themes, asking if there’s been an update and for alternatives. This suggests a possible UI change or theme-specific behavior.

Notes: Screenshots of the Theme Editor interface were included. Status: Original issue resolved; follow-up question remains open.

How can I select specific collections instead of default collection when I’m customizing my site? I have a rich text box on each of my drop down menu items under Artwork, but when I change the text it changes on all the pages. I have tried many different things but nothing is working. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there, @awirtz . Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Community Forums with your question around editing these pages. My name is Imogen. It’s good to meet you!

The reason why you’re noticing this edit being presented across all of your collection pages is because you currently have all of your collection pages assigned to the same template. If you’re wanting to have this text only be present for a specific collection page, then you will want to create a new collection page template, add that rich text to that template, and then do that same process for any additional collections you wish to make this edit for.

Making new templates is very straightforward, and they will use your ‘default template’ as a basis for their creation. If you’re in the theme editor, and navigation to a collection page, you should see ‘default collection’ visible across the top of the page as part of a dropdown menu. If you hover over this option, you can click an option to build a new template. This will allow you to build that new template using the previous ‘default’ as a starting point. Then, when you’ve made the desired edits, you can assign the new template to a specific collection by going to ‘Products > Collections’, clicking on the desired collection, and then changing the assigned template using the ‘theme template setting’ on the right side of the screen.

Thank you for the explanation, that worked. I appreciate you time.

Hi Imogen,

Thank you for this, it is very straightforward. However, when I hover over the Default collection as per your instructions, nothing comes up. It looks like it is just plain text.

Has there been an update? Do I have any other options? I checked using both the Dawn theme and Publisher theme.

Thank you in advance.
