How can I set a per product shipping fee on standard plan?

Topic summary

A merchant on Shopify’s Standard plan needs to set per-product shipping fees for cricket equipment that varies dramatically in size and weight—from bags of balls to bowling machines and digital scoreboards. They don’t track weight on-site and ship via different methods (mail, pallet, two-man delivery) within one country only.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Weight-based workaround: Assign uniform weights to all products (e.g., 5kg each), then create tiered shipping rates (5kg = $5, 10kg = $10, etc.). This manual approach works but doesn’t reflect actual product weights.
  • Third-party apps: Apps like Shipeasy can handle per-product shipping rates but require Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS), which is only available on Advanced/Shopify/Plus plans or as a paid add-on to the Shopify plan.

Current Status:
The merchant seeks the cheapest way to enable CCS without upgrading their entire plan. A developer (@sniper2804) offered a free pilot app specifically for this use case, which the merchant enthusiastically accepted. An installation link was provided: https://apps.shopify.com/shipping-calculator-shipmagic.

Note: The app also requires CCS to be enabled.

Hello, we are on the standard shopify plan, so currently do not have CCS enabled.

My client sells a range of products that vary in size and weight - though we do not track the weight on the site.

We will ship depending on the specific product by mail, palette or two man delivery team.

How can I set a per product shipping fee, where I can just state what that products fee is? This would then lead to a rule for the basket where say a palette would overule any mailed items, but currently the bigger issue is just how can I get a per product shipping fee on the site?

The zones or profiles are of no use as the rules are based on weight or order price. Shipping will be for one country only.

I don’t know which way to turn.

Many thanks

Hello @tireddad !

When it comes to ‘per product’ shipping rates, at the moment the only way around this is to go for the weight condition.

I would recommend you set the exact same weight across all your products, then create a shipping rate for a particular weight, so for example if your order weighs x2 times that weight, the rate goes up, etc. For example:

  1. Set your products to weigh 5kg, all of them
  2. Create a shipping rate for 5kg, set it as i.e. $5, then create another for 10kg, set it for $10, and keep going up, creating these rates until whatever point you feel is reasonable.
  3. That way, if 2 products are added, the weight will be 10kg, and so it will go for the higher cost shipping rate.

The above is a bit of a manual process, but it can do the job if you wish to use this workaround. I understand it’s also not ideal if you need weight of product to be specified, - but if a customer needs to know the weight, you could just add it under the product description, where it won’t affect the ‘product weight’ section that goes towards your shipping rate.

What kind of products are you selling - would you expect customers to buy more than 1 item at your store?

The products are cricket equipment, so there could a be a bag of balls, but also then a bowling machine, or a sightscreen, or a digital scoreboard.

The size and scope varies enormously. So checkout would be 50:50 one item or more than one item.

I see!

So, does the option I described above work for your business?

Alternatively, I have had a look and I found that by using an app like Shipeasy linked here, you could directly implement shipping rates per item and various other parameters if there is something else that you can think of.

This is a paid app, and on the page I linked above they have all of the info around their fees.

Additionally, to use the app you must have our Carrier Calculated Shipping API, which you can learn more about here.

Thank you, we are on the basic plan currently.

What is the easiest / cheapest way to get CCS added to our account. All of the apps that I have looked at for custom shipping fees etc require this, whether they attach directly to UPS, DPD etc.

If we have to then signup for an app monthly as well, this is a significant increase in cost from the basic plan. So what is the easiest route to enable CCS - I have read it can be an option standalone if we contact Shopify, rather than wholesale upgrading our plan enormously. We can then choose an app for the delivery setup that we get on with.

Thank you

Any update?

Thank you

As of now, Carrier Calculated Shipping can be added to your account if your store is on the Advanced, Shopify, or Plus plan. If you’re on the Shopify plan, then you can add this feature for a monthly fee or switch from monthly to yearly billing.

If you would like to learn more about adding it for an additional fee, you should get in touch with our support here, and we will be happy to look into it for your account.

And yes, you will then be able to integrate an app of your choosing, as those apps require you to have CCS enabled by default.

Hi @tireddad ,

I am building an app for solving this exact use case. I am looking for few users to pilot the app for free. Would you be interested in trying it out?

P.S. - This app will also require CCS to be enabled.

Like you would not believe! Yes please.

It seems a strange way to organise given the breadth of products size and their weight.

We could sell a battery for a bowling machine, but it would weight more than something that has to ship on a pallette.

Please do reach out.

Thank you
