How can I set up a 'buy 4 get 1 free' discount for the same item?

I would like to create an automatic discount whereby if someone has 5 of the SAME product in their cart, one of them would be free. (buy 4 get the 5th free). I can only see a way to set it up so that it gives the 5th item free if they add ANY 4 items.

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I’m happy to provide some assistance with creating a Buy X, Get Y discount for customers.

To ensure the automatic discount is correctly set up, I recommend checking out our Buy X, Get Y Discounts document as it touches on how to successfully achieve this. However, you can simply:

  • Head to the Discounts section, from the Shopify admin.

  • From the Discounts page, click Create discount.

  • From the Select discount type menu, click Buy X get Y.

  • Under METHOD, select Automatic discount.

  • In the Title section, enter a name for the automatic discount (for example, buyonegetonefree).

  • In the Customer buys section, configure the following settings:

    • Choose Minimum quantity of items.
    • In the Any items from section, choose Specific Products.
    • Use the search field or the Browse button to add the product you’re looking to offer the discount on.

  • In the Customer gets section, configure the following settings:

    • Set the quantity of items that the customer must add to their cart to get the discount (i.e 1).
    • In the Any items from section, choose Specific Products.
    • Use the Browse button to add the same product you added previously (i.e in the Customer Buys section).
    • In the At a discounted value section, choose the discounted value that customers receive when they buy the set number of items. If you want to offer items for free, then select Free.

  • Select the Active Dates.

  • Click Save.

It’s important to note however, the customer must add all 4 items to their cart in order for the discount to successfully apply at checkout. If the customer only adds 4 of the same items to their cart, the automatic discount will not add the 5th item on their behalf. This would be considered a limitation of automatic discounts currently.

So just to double check, if I want to create a buy 4 of the same product and get the 5th free, I will need to create this discount for every item on my website?

It will not let me use the same discount title. The title is buy 3 get 4th free.

Also, only 1 active automatic discount can be active at a time.

Just to clarify, I would like the discount buy 3 get 4th free to be valid on all items on my website, but only if they choose the same 3 items. thank you

I want to offer same pack offer for customers but facing following issues:

  1. When I select selection, user can add 3 different product and gets discount.
  2. If I select Specific product, I will have to create discount for all of the products which are 100+ (not a good solution)
  3. Even if I want to create discount for each product, shopify doen’t allow to use same title, I can’t come up with different names for 100+ products.
