Thanks for reading my questions. If I had a store with 50 different items, this would be easy. But having only one item with options has me perplexed.
The store I am creating sells 1 item – let’s call it a hat – but in 20 colours, with 3 band finishes, two tassel styles, and nine possible sizes. 1080 possible combinations.
I want shoppers to be able to view and pick from collections by colour, by band, by tassel, or by size.
When an item is selected from any of these collections, product page should show all the other options available too. So they pick “blue hat” and the three bands, two tassels and nine sizes are available for selection and must be to add to cart. Be great if I could also have the other colour options showing to a visitor can quickly jump to the options for that colour.
I don’t know if I need to, for example, create 20 items – one for each colour – then add the bands, tassel and sizes as variants. Or just one item with all as variants? Or all 1080. Or one for each size.
Any thoughts or guidance is appreciated.
Also – for bonus points – anyone know how to add a colour picker to a page rather than/addition to a list of colours? I’ve not picked a theme yet so if one of those offers the option, great.

= 1080 possible combinations → Not possible with Shopify, you have a limit of 100 combinations per product. The solution is easy here, create one product per color with the following variants:
3 band finishes
2 tassel styles
9 possible sizes
= 54 possible combinations.
This would allow you to sort by color while having individual products as well!
Also – for bonus points – anyone know how to add a colour picker to a page rather than/addition to a list of colours? I’ve not picked a theme yet so if one of those offers the option, great.
Any of those themes here will have this feature, better than to install an app. If you decide to use a free theme like Debut there is a tutorial to do this although a bit complicated:
