How can I stop spam bot registrations on my account?

I hope someone can help! i tried to address this with Shopify Support Advisors and they directed me to options that were not applicable to my issue.

I’ve received anywhere between 5-50 spam registrations from the “d3vl e3vl” alias per day. The location is from India.

I am unable to stop this “bot” from registering their account, of course I do not approve their account, so they are unable to advance any further i.e log in. The email addresses this bot is signing up with belong to people who have come forth to say they did not register to be our customer.

It is becoming extremely frustrating as I have to clean up the entries in the Customer section by deleting any entries with this alias and I am receiving complaint emails from customers informing me they did not register to be an account of ours.

Wondering if anyone else experienced this

Hi there - do you have CAPTCHA enabled on your store, for account creation/registration?

Let us know, thanks.

Hi

I have exactly the same issue. It seems like Shopify need to make some amends to stop this.

Hi, I am having the same issue.. Over 800 account creations.

Customer name: d3vl e3vl

Every email is different.

I speculate they have an stolen email addresses.

How would we know that and where to look and fix please?

Check under Online Store / Preferences, at the very bottom. Click here for more info.

Hi

I’ve already got that turned on but doesn’t seem to stop the spam accounts

Hello, yes i have both features enabled

Hi, is this the contact name of all the spam entries you are receiving? d3vl e3vl

and about when did this happen to you?

It’s super inconvenient. When did this approximately happen to you?

Shopify referred me to use a third party fraud filter app, which didn’t work for my issue as I want to block this user from entering ANY data on the customer account registration page.

Do you need customer accounts? If not disable that for your theme/store settings.
If you do need them you could try using an app like ‘Customer Fields’ to create a better account form (one with spam protection, rule capability, catch and release, etc). Might be worth giving the trial at least a try.

Let us know if you need a hand.

Cheers.

Can you elaborate on this ‘Customer Fields’ app? I am facing the same issue in my store right now and I don’t know how to stop them

Well with the Customer Fields app there are some additional things you can do to safeguard from bogus accounts being made in your Shopify back end. For starters the app uses Google reCAPTCHA v3 for behind the scenes spam control. You even have some control over the spam sensitivity.

From there you can set the form (the one you create with the app, that becomes your new account registration form) to force users to manually verify their email address before an account is created. Better yet you have the capability to inspect it (catch and release) before an account is created - new customers who register will require your approval before their account can be activated.

Lastly, you have the ability to set rules and custom ‘honeypot’ fields with the upgraded plan; both of these can be used to reduce Bot activity.

We hope this helps!

Hello,

Thanks for your response, apologies I was not keeping up with the replies. I can’t seem to find the app named “customer fields”. Can you please advise the specific app name?

Apologies for the late reply; it has been a very busy couple of weeks. Here is the app.

Cheers.

Thank you! That app is so easy to use and it did the trick to stop D3vl E3vl from being able to make hundreds of accounts by using a rule to block the first name. Plus…bonus, customers can edit their own account emails/phone numbers!

Happy we could help.

Happy holidays.
