I am interested in trying a new theme, specifically the Retina theme. But, I don’t want to damage the Craft theme that I already have until I’m sure the new theme gives the appearance I want. What procedure should I use to protect the old theme until I am ready to go public with a new theme?
After you add a new theme it is not published automatically. you can make changes and preview it before publishing it. Your previous will be live until you publish a new theme.

Regarding your concern about trying a new theme
You can rest assure about it because each theme works independently, when you install a new theme, that will set as draft and when you make changes on it that will not affect or damage your current live theme
Once you publish your new theme that will completely replaced the theme (Craft) and changed to Retina

You mentioned you have suggestions for my website. I’m interested in hearing what you have to say or offer. I will mention that I have heard a lot on “what” I need to do. I have next to nothing on “how” to do it. That’s my stumbling block. Shopify seems to have a lot of rabbit holes that I could go down. I’m at the point that I just want to get this done. So, I’m interested in any suggestions or resources that you have, especially those that follow the “what” with a “how.”
