A user asked how to translate page URLs in Shopify’s Translate & Adapt app, noting that English-speaking visitors shouldn’t land on French URLs like /pages/location-de-voiture. They also inquired about translating SEO metadata and automatic language redirection.
Initial Limitations:
URL translation was initially unavailable, only being considered for future development
Automatic redirection was possible through Markets auto-redirection or the Geolocation app
Store metadata could be translated via Apps > Translate & Adapt > Store metadata
Major Update:
The feature progressed from beta testing to general availability. URL handle translation is now supported for:
Products
Collections
Articles
Pages
Users can access this through the Translate & Adapt app, where a “URL handle” field appears for each translatable resource (see included screenshot).
Current Limitation:
The feature supports language-based translations (e.g., French vs. English) but does not yet support market-based localization within the same language (e.g., different URLs for US vs. UK English, or Australia vs. New Zealand). A user requested this market-specific URL capability for managing region-specific product collections.

I have installed the Translate & Adapt app from shopify. My default language is French and I added English.
How do I translate the page URLs? For example, one of my pages is /pages/location-de-voiture and I would also like to have /pages/car-rental
How to modify the “Page Title”, “Description” and “URL and Handle” for the Search engine listing preview to have both languages ? My English speaking visitors cant land on /pages/location-de-voiture because its in french..
Also, Are they redirected automatically from browser language ? If they need to manually select their language, thats not the best option.
URL translation isn’t possible currently. It’s being considered.
“Page Title”, “Description” and “URL and Handle” - for your whole store go to Apps > Translate & Adapt > Store metadata. This is the translation of what you see in Online Store > Preferences at the top. For individual resources such as products & collections, it inherits from the title and description.
“URL translation isn’t possible currently. It’s being considered.”
This is a very important function Shopify is missing to really compete with the multistore capabilities of Woocommerce and Magento. If you guys fix this it would be a big step in seo for shopify. Do you know if and when this is ready?
Thanks @fwegberts1 - this is definitely a high value feature that we’re aware of, but we can’t currently give a firm idea of when it will be addressed just yet.
I would also really appreciate this feature, i just moved over from wordpress/woocommerce where I was able to do this with WPML app and would like to do it in Shopify too to help my SEO.
I just read about the beta feature for translating product URLs. I would be super thrilled to participate in this beta feature and would be happy to provide helpful feedback throughout the release.
Hi there, I too want to participate in this beta feature. Yesterday I filled the details in the form you provided but I didn’t get an email or anything… so what happens after filling out the form? Is the feature available for me now or do I have to do anything? Thank you for your help
Hi @richbrown_staff I filled out the form a few days ago.. what now? Is the feature available as soon as you fill out the form? I need the feature asap.. Thank you!!
