@aliceweegee Both the options are available. without adding there are need to add some custom code to manage such functionality. And there are several apps available to add-on products.

Then I think you have to keep other products as addon products on the website. So if the customer selects that product then it’ll be added to cart separately. so your different product can be checkout at the same with if the customer opts for the addons product.
