How can I upload manual translations to Shopify without an app?

Hi, I’m wondering how can I upload manual translations onto Shopify. Do I really need to do this via an app? (I prefer not to unless that’s free of charge). I’ve been looking at other people’s question on this topic but couldn’t find the answer. Please advise. Many thanks in advance!

Hi, @Tiff2 .

Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!

If you’re looking to translate your store into a different language, then you can use the Language editor to make manual translations on Shopify. The Language editor can be accessed from your admin by simply navigating to the Online store (‘Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit languages’). However, if you’d like to offer different languages and allow customers to choose their preferred language, then we’d recommend using a third-party translation app.

Third-party translation apps, like Langify or T Lab - AI Language Translate, offers the ability to translate your store into multiple languages and provides customers with a widget to change languages. If you need any help with a third-party app, the app developer is always available to assist you - you can reach out to them directly through the contact information found in the Support section of their app’s page.

I’d love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products do you sell? How many languages are you looking to translate?

Hi Elias, thanks so much for your advice! I’m having a clothing business and I’m just planning to have both English and Japanese. I believe in this case I’ll need third-party translation apps as you mentioned and I’ll look into that. Thanks!

Hi, @Tiff2 .

Thank you for following up!

If you’re planning to have one extra language (Japanese) and you’re happy with doing the translations manually, then I’d recommend giving T Lab - AI Language Translate a try as they offer a free plan with unlimited manual translations.

Since you’re starting a clothing business, then we’ve also got some tips/suggestions that may be beneficial for you. If you’re interested, then please check out the following Shopify blogs:

That being said, when you’re ready to launch the store, you may also want to start planning some marketing strategies and/or running ad campaigns to increase conversions. Do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?

Thank you very much Elias! That’s the app I have in mind after you mentioned that to me. I think I will install that.

Thanks for the Shopify blogs on the clothing businesses and marketing. They are very useful! I’m still at the initial stage and these will definitely help. My biggest concern I have now is how to set up the check out process in terms of shipping, how to set up emails etc when I start selling. If there is any materials or apps you recommend please let me know too.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Hey, @Tiff2 .

Thanks again for following up!

The shipping settings can vary drastically between businesses, unless you’re planning to offer free shipping, so more information may be required in order to assist you with this. In short, you can decide if you want to set up shipping rates or use calculated shipping rates. Nonetheless, if you’d like to explore the various options available on Shopify, then I’d recommend taking a look at our guide - Shipping and delivery.

As for setting up emails, there are different types of emails that you can set up. For example, there are notifications sent out by the system (eg. order confirmations, shipping confirmations, etc.) and you can edit these in your settings. On the other hand, there are newsletters (eg. email campaigns, customer surveys, etc.) that can be sent out by using Shopify Email or third-party apps, like Privy, Klaviyo, or Omnisend.

Which stage are you at with developing your store? Were you able to set up your shipping rates?
