How can selection of specific product metafields improve online store management?

Custom Data, Metafields are awesome and a great way to customize my store. I use many custom metafields since I sell different types of products. One major suggestion I ask developers to consider is:

Allow for us to select which custom metafields we want to use for each product.

For instance: Let’s say I sell t-shirts and painting workshop tickets. My custom metafields for t-shirts may be:

  1. Small, Medium, Large, X-Large,
  2. Women, Men, Boys, Girls
  3. Pink, Red, Blue

… And my custom metafields for the painting workshop tickets are:

  1. Date & Time
  2. Location
  3. Watercolor, Acrylic
  4. Beginner, Expert

Currently, the way Shopify has it, the custom metafields on my products easily become 7 or more, combining the t-shirt and workshop custom data, which becomes chaotic on the admin’s product page. I know that Shopify allows for you to pin and unpin custom data metafields, but it would be more convenient to be able to select your custom data fields from the product page. Also, if Shopify allowed for shop owners to select the custom metafields they want to use for each product, it would help keep things organized.

Just a suggestion.

Hi there, @HappyMerchant . Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the Shopify Community, and provide the feedback that you have here around metafields! I’m happy to go ahead and complete a feedback form on your behalf which will get passed along to the Metafields Team for their consideration. Though I can’t promise what the outcome of sharing your post and feedback with them will be, you can trust that the appropriate folks here at Shopify will be made aware! Thanks again for your feedback!
