How can you let customers edit their Shopify orders after placing them?

A customer places an order and then notices something is wrong:

  • The shipping address needs to be changed
  • They selected the wrong variant
  • They entered the wrong quantity
  • They forgot to add something to the order

Without an order-editing option, the next step is usually contacting support.

Someone from the team then has to find the order, make the change, and respond to the customer.

A better approach is to provide a limited window after checkout where customers can edit eligible parts of their order themselves.

Modrata Order Edit provides this option for Shopify stores.

It allows merchants to:

→ Set a custom order-editing window
→ Choose which order details can be edited
→ Let customers make eligible changes themselves
→ Receive notifications when an order is edited

This can reduce repetitive order-change requests and save support time, while giving customers more control over their orders.

Instead of handling every small order mistake manually, make order editing self-service.

Self-serve edits can remove a lot of repetitive support work. I’d make the cutoff state the centre of the design: what can change before fulfillment is locked, what requires a payment delta, and what becomes read-only after the label is created.

Log the reason too — wrong variant, address typo, quantity, forgotten item. Those requests are useful CRO evidence: repeated size swaps may point to a weak fit explanation, while mobile address corrections may point to an input problem upstream.

The store would not like to absorb the price difference if it is higher. With Vista order editing, we issue the refund automatically as per the store’s settings (original payment or store credits), but for the balance, it shows as pending on the customer’s end. Also, the store controls how many times an order can be edited if it is within the time frame or the order is unfulfilled.

Shopify doesn’t let customers edit their own orders by default - only admins can do it from the backend. To offer self-service, you’ve got two options : a manual policy (customers message you within a set window, you edit it for them), or an order-editing app that adds an “edit my order” option on the order status page, letting customers fix addresses/quantities/variants themselves within a time limit you set.

Either way, set clear cutoff rules (e.g., no edits once a shipping label’s created) so it doesn’t create fulfillment headaches. And it’s worth tracking why customers ask for edits - often it points to a checkout fix, not just a feature to add.
