How do I add a background image for all pages of my site?

I’m trying to add a custom background for all pages of my theme to celebrate the upcoming autumn season. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to add it to my code. I’ve attempted writing the code in Custom CSS and in theme.liquid, but it doesn’t work.

This is the code I was able to write. I’m still new to both CSS and liquid, so it’s highly likely I haven’t written it correctly, though I’m certain this is what it’s supposed to look like.
