I have been working on a new webshop (not out yet) using the development version of Dawn. But now that the final version is out I naturally want to switch to that. However, I am not entirely surer what the best procedure is. I guess it’s sort of a manual job?
Let me know if this would be the best way to go?
I have downloaded the final version of Dawn to my Themes Library
I would then go a switch to that one - leaving the old one in the library
Then I would copy the settings_data.json file from the old to the new theme
Then I would manually go through all the files I have edited in the old theme (marked with dots) and copy over the edits I have made. I just hope I can find them all
I will also copy over the new template files I have made
Dawn was made available on the theme store as of August 31st and is the first theme available for Online Store 2.0. To update the theme you would need to download a fresh version of Dawn from the theme store.
However, if the code is unique in any way - ie. you’ve made code customizations or you’ve added third-party apps to it, then you are absolutely correct that you would need to manually transfer customizations over to the fresh version from the old version.
I did quite a few code changes to the development version of Dawn that I am been working on. No apps - just coding.
But do you know how much actually changed from the late July development version of Dawn to the now final and released version?
I am wondering if I have to copy individual lines of code from my old dawn version to the new - or if I can just copy past entire template, section and snippet files. Do you know that?
I could not definitively outline what has or hasn’t changed, but it’s always advisable to have the most up-to-date version of a theme!
As we’re not code experts at Shopify I’m not in the best position to advise as to whether or not you should copy/paste single lines or entire sections - you might get better advice, in that respect from other experts on this forum. A lot of what you can and cannot transfer over will depend on the nature of the feature itself that’s you’re trying to duplicate.
We do have some theme code editing tutorials you might want to check out. And bear in mind too that if you copy over code and it seems to not quite fit (or has adverse effects on your new theme) then you can always roll the code back to the previously saved version and try again.
