I am having trouble entering my tax number in the taxes and duties section of the settings. It says it is invalid though i know that it is valid. I have confirmed that I entered the correct information. I have cleared my browser cookie cache. I have tried an alternate browser. Nothing has helped. I need help, or I cannot use shopify for my business.
Topic summary
Problem: A merchant’s tax number was repeatedly rejected in Shopify’s Taxes and duties settings. They verified the entry, cleared browser cache/cookies, and tried another browser without success.
Root cause: The number entered was a general business number, not a tax-specific GST account number required for Canadian tax settings.
Key terms: GST = Goods and Services Tax. CRA = Canada Revenue Agency.
Resolution: The merchant realized they needed to register for a GST account with the CRA to obtain a valid GST/HST account number. After recognizing this, the issue was considered solved on the user’s side rather than a platform error.
Status: Resolved. No further action requested from support; the fix is to use the proper GST account number instead of a business number.
I solved my own problem. I was the problem. I thought my business number was a tax number. Turns out I have to register for a GST account with the CRA.
