How do I do the categories for my store right?

Hey everyone! :waving_hand: I’m diving into the exciting world of e-commerce with my first Shopify website, pixelperfectgaming.co.uk! As a newbie to both Shopify and online business, I’m eager to learn and grow. My store offers a variety of video games, accessories, consoles, and more!

Right now, I’m in the opening stages of setting up my store, and while I’ve dabbled a bit in WordPress before, this is my first real venture into website ownership and entrepreneurship.

I’ve noticed that our current categories are pretty general, focusing on gaming items broadly. However, I’m keen on improving the browsing experience for our customers by introducing specific categories for different gaming platforms and then subcategories for things like, games, accessories, etc

I’m envisioning the categories looking something like this:

  • Nintendo Switch
  • PlayStation 4 (PS4)
  • PlayStation 3 (PS3)
  • PlayStation 2 (PS2)
  • PlayStation 1 (PS1)
  • PSP (PlayStation Portable)

I’d love some guidance and tips on efficiently setting up these categories on my Shopify store. Since this is my first Shopify website and my first real business venture, any advice from the community would be incredibly valuable, I would like it to be sorta like now with the store page, then you click on store/shop and from there you can browse, search or filter by the categories

For your store, you might consider each gaming platform—like Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One—as a major category. Under each, you can create subcategories such as Games, Accessories, Consoles, Spare Parts, and Mods.

In Shopify, “Collections” serve to manage these groups. To set up your categories, navigate to “Products” then “Collections” in your Shopify admin. For a cleaner look, consider moving less essential links like Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy to the footer menu.

To enhance the customer shopping experience further, consider adding advanced search and filtering options. There are several apps available in the Shopify App Store that allow customers to sort products by price, type, or rating. Alternatively, you could work with a Shopify Partner to develop custom filtering tailored to your specific needs.

Lastly, for your store’s visual design, I recommend selecting a secondary accent color to draw attention to key elements. Use this color for things like announcement bars or button backgrounds to effectively guide your visitors’ attention.
