How do I erase unused metafields?

Topic summary

A user discovered unwanted metafields (likely from a previously uninstalled app called “Product Wiz”) appearing in their Matrixify export and couldn’t find them in Shopify to delete.

The Issue:

  • Metafields exist as values on individual products/variants but have no definition in Shopify’s settings
  • This makes them invisible in the standard Shopify interface

Two Solutions Provided:

  1. Bulk deletion via Matrixify:

    • Export all products without filters
    • Clear the unwanted metafield columns (leave only headers)
    • Re-import to remove values store-wide
  2. Through Shopify Admin:

    • Navigate to Settings → Custom data → Products → View unstructured metafields
    • Add a definition for the unwanted metafield
    • Delete the definition and select “Delete field and its saved values”

The solution was confirmed successful by another user.

Recently I did an export with Matrixify and saw a bunch of metafields full of weird data cluttering up my spreadsheet.

I saw the name “Product Wiz” mentioned and so I think it’s undeleted data from that app. I did a trial of it recently and it was very difficult to remove.

I can’t seem to find the metafield in Shopify to delete it. Can anyone help?

Hi @Platypyrus

These would be Metafields without definition, thus they only exist as values for individual products/variants.

There are two best ways to delete them:

1 - As you already are using Matrixify app - you can also use our app to bulk remove those values from your store.

Make sure to export all Products without any filters selected and for the Metafields that you wish to remove, set clear values in that Metafield column in all rows. So that you only have the column header in that column.

Save the file and import back. Thus such an import would set it empty for all Products and it would no longer exist in the store.

2 - Another option is to go into your stores Admin → Settings → Custom data → Products (or Variants if those are variant metafields) → View unstructured metafields section. Then find the metafield you wish to delete and press “Add definition” for it. Select any type and name that Shopify allows and create the definition.

Once created locate that Metafield definition in Assigned to all Products section for definitions, open it and press Delete for it.

This will open a pop-up message where you can select “Delete field and its saved values” and delete.

Thus you would achieve the same that the metafield would be deleted as this would also remove that metafields values from all products where it is set.

I hope this helps, if you need further details feel free to reach out to our support directly!
