New to Shopify and e-commerce in general. I’m planning to sell car modification parts which I’ll be importing from Taiwan, possibly China, and selling in the U.S. What’s the best way to handle import duties? Is it true that anything below $25,000 doesn’t get taxed?
Import duties are typically based on the product’s value, classification, and country of origin. The de minimis value, which is the threshold below which goods can enter the country duty-free, is currently set at $800 for the U.S. This means that if the total value of your imported goods is below $800, they may generally be exempt from import duties.
However, it’s worth noting that other fees, such as customs processing fees or taxes like sales tax, may still apply. Additionally, certain products may have specific regulations or restrictions that could affect the import process. It’s important to research and comply with any relevant regulations, including product safety standards or labeling requirements.
To ensure accurate and compliant handling of import duties, it’s recommended to work with a customs broker or freight forwarder who specializes in international shipping. They can guide you through the import process, help calculate and manage duties, and ensure compliance with customs regulations.
Sorry, I meant $2,500.
