When the customer buys from my store do i get the money and how do I know when a order has been placed

When customer places order, you will see it in your admin side from Orders. Shopify will hold the money for some time to ensure you did, in fact, provide the service and customer is happy, and then will send your payment to you.

When a customer buys something from your store you will receive that money to whichever bank account you have chosen to set up your payment gateway with. When a customer does place an order you will receive a notification letting you know you have received an order.
