How do I set up different package sizes depending on products for carrier calculated shipping?

There are 3 scenarios possible for buying from my shop.

  1. 1 or 2 item: 40in x 8in x 8in box (default box)

  2. 3 items: 40in x 16in x 8in box

  3. stickers: 9.6in x 6.1 envelope

So my questions are:

How do I set it up so that when the customer adds 3 of my items, the carrier calculated shipping uses the dimensions of scenario 2 above instead of the default box?

Same question but how do I set it up so that if customer ONLY buys stickers, the carrier calculated shipping uses the envelope dimensions in scenario 3 above instead of the default box?

Hi @ruggedjp ,

Thank you for getting in touch. If you have a variety of package sizes and shapes that you use to ship your products, you’d be best served checking out the following apps:

These apps allow you to assign packages to products and as a result you should see more accurate shipping rates at checkout. They give you more control of your shipping rates and all three are popular apps used by many merchants. I’d recommend checking out each one to see what features are on offer.

Hi @ruggedjp ,

To set up the shipping calculation based on the number of items and their dimensions in Shopify, you can check out the shipping apps suggested by @Victor_5 .An additional option to consider is the PH MultiCarrier Shipping Label app, which includes an automatic box-packing feature. By accurately configuring your product dimensions and adding your box sizes, the app will automatically select the appropriate box based on the number of products being shipped.

Feel free to try out the app and see if it meets your requirements. If you encounter any difficulties during the setup, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for assistance. We’ll be happy to help you with the complete setup process.

I migrated from another platform and have a terrible time setting up shipping cost.

I can’t get shipping rates according to cities and zip codes just the whole country. Then I cannot set shipping rates according to dimensions and just the weight.

It is really terrible. The only solution to pay an upgrade plan of shopify and then pay again an app.

Such a waste of money and time. If I would have known earlier I would have started with wordpress for sure.

I have tried to find a solution and all I can see are people having the same issue and nothing changing. Really hope you will take matter under consideration and work on a solution that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, since its not quantum physics it the bare minimum requirement for an e shop to be able to set shipping rates according to dimensions, volumetric weight would be even better, as this is the way couriers calculate the cost too!

@IoannisGiov ,

Thank you for your feedback on this and I can understand your frustration at the situation. These apps exist to offer merchants the opportunity to have more control over their shipping rates, although I appreciate that you believe the features they offer should be built into Shopify as default options.

Your suggestions are welcome and I will be submitting them to our development team for their consideration.

Has anyone tried Shippo? I was looking for an app to assign default package size per product. This app says it can save you money with deeper discounts than shopify shipping. If I can offset the cost of the app with deeper shipping discounts then that would be a net zero win.

Hey there. Totally understand how frustrating it can be when Shopify doesn’t have a native solution! I know it’s a different app, but you can address this problem using our app Starshipit.

In Starshipit, you can set up a shipping rule so that if an order contains X SKU(s), you can assign Y package. Then, whenever an order comes through to Starshipit, the rule will apply. I’d be happy to explain in more detail if you need it!

Hi Victor,

I just wanted to mention, that I agree this type of function should be built in. Do you know if there is anything in the pipeline to implement this? Thanks.
