How do shopify partial payments work?

There are a couple of different options when it comes to partial payments, such as allowing the customers to split the payment (eg. cash, credit card, gift card, etc.) or allowing the customers to pay in installment (eg. four equal, interest-free installment payments).
If you’re looking to allow customers to split their payments, then I’d recommend taking a look at our guide on multiple and partial payments. However, if you’re looking to allow installment payments, then I’d recommend taking a look at Shop Pay Installments or a third-party buy now pay later app.
Just to clarify, which type of partial payments are you looking for?
I have problems with those instructions.
When I try to split payment, most of my payment methods are greyed out leaving only cash, gift card or credit card (manual entry). However, my customer had paid via another Shopify approved method (HitPay). I am therefore not able to capture any partial payment.

I understand that you’re trying to use split payment and most of your payment methods are greyed out. However, you also mentioned that your customer was able to pay via HitPay. Just to confirm, are you using HitPay for your Online store? If so, can you confirm whether split payments is something that they offer?
Typically, if you’re not seeing a particular payment method on the Shopify POS, then it’s possible that the payment method hasn’t been enabled in your app settings or it’s not supported on the Shopify POS. If you’re using Shopify Payments, then you can use Shop Pay Installments. However, I can’t confirm whether HitPay supports split payments on Shopify POS, so I’d recommend reaching out to your payment provider directly for further clarification.
That being said, if you need help with setting up alternate payment methods, then I’d encourage taking a look at the following guides:
