How do returns work for international online stores?

First off I have read the documentation on this site and can not find the answer to my noob questions.

how does returns actually work? Do they send the defective product to me or to the producer? I’m a very long way from America, postage is expensive.

How returns are handled will be different for every business. If you’re operating a dropshipping business where you’re you don’t handle the returns, then some store owners set up a local address where returns can be accepted. Others prefer to offer partial refunds instead of a return because it’s cheaper to process a refund than it is to have the product shipped back. In most cases, the supplier will not accept returns, especially since customers won’t know to send it back to your supplier and not you.
