I’m curious how Shopify sellers decide which products are worth making short videos for.
If you have a large catalog, creating videos for every SKU can take a lot of time. Do you usually make videos only for bestsellers, high-margin products, products you plan to run ads for, or products that already have some organic interest?
I’m also wondering if short video draft concepts would be useful before investing in a full creator shoot.
For example:
Start with existing product photos
Test a few short video angles
Compare which concept feels worth producing further
Possible angles could be:
simple product demo
problem-solution video
creator-style explainer
localized version for another market
For your store, what matters most when deciding whether a product deserves video content first: revenue, margin, ad potential, customer questions, or something else?
We usually prioritize videos for products that already show demand rather than trying to cover the entire catalog.
Bestsellers, high-margin items, and products used in paid ads get attention first because the ROI is easier to measure.
I also like the idea of creating short video drafts from existing product images it can help validate a concept before investing in a full creator shoot.
Testing different angles first is a smart way to see what resonates with customers while keeping production costs under control.
Prioritizing products that already show demand feels like the most practical approach, especially when the goal is to test creative direction without committing too much production budget upfront.
I’m curious how you usually judge whether a draft video angle is worth turning into a more polished creator video.
Do you look more at early ad metrics, customer comments, click-through rate, add-to-cart behavior, or just whether the concept clearly explains the product?
Also, for a first draft, would you care more about:
realistic product visuals
a strong hook
clear problem-solution messaging
multiple angle options
faster turnaround
Trying to understand what would actually make this useful for merchants rather than just another video tool.
@LeopoldX ,
For me the biggest indicator is whether the video grabs attention in the first few seconds.
If the hook is strong but engagement or CTR is low I usually test a different angle before investing in a polished version.
Add-to-cart rate is another metric I watch because it shows whether the video is actually helping people make a buying decision.
For a first draft I’d prioritize a strong hook and clear problem-solution messaging over perfect visuals.
If the concept works its much easier to justify spending more on a creator video later.
Fast turnaround and having a few different angles to test would also be a big advantage.
The point about the first few seconds makes a lot of sense. It sounds like the draft does not need to be perfect at the beginning, but it needs to quickly answer: “Will this angle make people stop and understand the product?”
I’m thinking the most useful draft structure might be something like:
Hook in the first 1-2 seconds
Show the problem clearly
Show the product in use
End with a simple benefit or reason to click
And instead of creating one polished video, the seller could quickly compare 3-5 different angles before choosing the one worth producing properly.
Do you think merchants would prefer to control the script and hook themselves, or would they rather upload product photos and let the system suggest a few angles automatically?
@LeopoldX ,
I think most merchants would prefer a mix of both.
Auto generated angles are great for saving time and sparking ideas but Id still want the ability to edit the hook and script so it matches my brand. If the tool could generate 3–5 solid concepts from product photos and then let me customize the best one that would probably be the most useful workflow.
A hybrid workflow makes sense: the system suggests several starting angles quickly, but the merchant still keeps control over the hook, script, and final direction.
Something like this sounds practical:
Upload product photos
Get 3-5 short concept drafts automatically
Review the hook and message for each one
Edit the best script or angle
Only then decide whether to make a polished creator-style video
That feels especially helpful for stores with many SKUs, because the first goal is not “make the final perfect ad,” but “find the angle worth producing.”
Thanks for sharing this. It gives me a much clearer idea of what would actually be useful for merchants.
That’s a clever strategy. I suggest ranking products according to High Margin and Ad Performance, which provide the quickest return on investment, in order to maintain efficiency.
In response to your suggestion regarding drafts: Definitely test first. We can begin by making “light” video drafts using your current images and motion effects in place of a full shoot. We can invest in a complete production for those winning items once we determine which perspective (Demo, Problem-Solution, or Explainer) has the highest level of engagement.
If you like this please mark my comment as solution.
Thanks!
Thanks, this is helpful. I agree that margin + ad potential is probably a better filter than making videos for the whole catalog.
I’m especially interested in the “light video drafts” idea: using existing product photos to test a few short angles first, then only investing more into the ones that feel promising.
For a larger store, would you start with bestsellers, high-margin SKUs, or products that already get organic interest?
I’d prioritize bestsellers, high-margin products, and anything you’re planning to advertise. Testing simple video concepts first is a great way to validate ideas before investing in a full shoot. Products that generate lots of customer questions are also strong candidates.
