I’m looking for some advice from other Shopify store owners.
My primary market is the USA, but I’ve started getting visitors from countries like Germany, the UK, and Singapore. While testing my store https://g8sport.com/, I noticed that some visitors rely on their browser to translate the website, but the experience isn’t always consistent across different browsers.
I’m wondering how other merchants handle this.
Do you rely on browser translation (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.)?
Have you added a translation app to your Shopify store instead?
If you use an app, which one has worked well without making the store difficult to manage?
I’d appreciate hearing what has worked best for your stores. Thanks!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll test Translate & Adapt on our store first. Have you noticed any impact on page speed or theme compatibility after adding multiple languages?
Translate & Adapt is built by Shopify so theme compatibility is generally not an issue since it integrates natively. No extra scripts loading on your storefront either, the translations are stored directly in your store’s data.
The one thing to keep an eye on is that some third-party apps (chat widgets, review apps, custom sections) won’t be translated automatically since Translate & Adapt only covers your theme and Shopify’s native content. For those you’d need to translate manually or check if the app has its own language settings.
Page speed impact is minimal to none since there’s no external script being loaded. You should be fine.
Thanks again! That clears things up. I was mainly concerned about page speed and compatibility with third-party apps, so it’s good to know the impact is minimal. I’ll start with Translate & Adapt and test it with the apps we’re currently using. I appreciate your help!
Hello there @John77
Most merchants don’t trust browser translation for consistency as it breaks layout and hides some elements of UX. A dedicated translation app is generally the better approach as it locks the control on the wording, SEO and formmatting on a per-language basis. Shopify’s built-in Translate & Adapt app is a good baseline for EU and APAC traffic, especially if you want to keep it simple. For more complex workflows, apps such as Weglot or Langify are popular choices, but add languages only in places where you get conversion intent.
