So everywhere it says that only those with “Shopify Payments” can have different currencies and prices displayed in checkout. But checking the website below at checkout if I change country to Vietnam it display in VND and any other country USD. Also their only payment options is PayPal so how did they do this without “Shopify Payments”? It can’t be a third party app right as apps can not change UI in checkout?
Found a few websites which all have this functionality, it shows different currencies and pricing based on country at checkout but none of them have Shopify Payments. How are they doing this? Been trying to figure it out for over 10 hours now
What tells you they don’t have Shopify Payments? The fact that only PayPal and COD are available as payment methods? That’s a feature of Shopify Payments actually, to disable various payment methods.
Ohh interesting, I thought Shopify Payments was a visible payment method like a card form at checkout so if they only show PayPal I assumed they didn’t have it. So Shopify Payments can run in the background and still let you hide the card option showing only PayPal?
Yeah if they want, though that is severely limiting and I don’t know why you would ever want only that form of payment.
The currency conversion is done by Shopify Payments too. It’s like your all-in-one payment mediator. If you sign up for Shopify Payments, all payments the customers do will go through it and convert it to whatever payout structure you have. So if your customer pays with Paypal in GPB, and your payout is Balance card USD, Shopify Payments can handle all that.
There is something else that is able, it’s really not very well known. It’s called Adyen. It’s not self-service though and you have to be approved through Shopify Support the last time I checked.
But yes, with or without Shopify Payments, there are several payment methods you can choose to do or not do. And having the currency local at checkout is indicative of Shopify Payments.
So just to confirm, if I want both the pricing and currency to automatically switch at checkout based on the customer’s shipping country I need Shopify Payments and there is no workaround? Would Adyen work as an alternative since Shopify Payments is not available in my country? Any other workarounds?
There really isn’t a workaround for countries that Shopify Payments isn’t available. You can display prices in their local currency on your store, but once they go to checkout, the charge reverts back to the store’s default currency. Not much you can do about that.
